Event description
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to make earth and lake pigments, then explore how to create their own natural paints.

About this Event

In this one day, introductory workshop, Helen Coleman will guide you through the process of making your own earth and lake pigments from local inorganic and organic materials, then use earth pigments to create your own natural paints.

The lake pigment process has been used by artists for thousands of years to convert plant and animal material into water-insoluble powders that can then be used to colour a wide variety of art mediums.

Techniques that will be explored in this workshop include water and alcohol pigment extraction, lake pigment production, earth pigment levigation and processing, tempera, glair and watercolour paint recipes, record-keeping and lightfast testing.

All materials are supplied. Students will take home samples of lake pigments made during the workshop, earth-based paint samples and small artworks made with these paints.

Morning and afternoon tea and a vegetarian lunch is provided. (Fridge space is available for students that wish to bring their own refreshments.)

Note: This workshop follows on from Helen's Introduction to Natural Inks workshop run the previous day, which focuses on extraction and use of plant pigments as inks. (Please see Helen's website for information about Introduction to Natural Inks workshop bookings, www.helencolemanart.com.au).
