Event description

Description

Big issues, brain-stretching ideas, intimate conversations, practical actions.

Friday 6 October 2017

Carclew is pleased to present an ongoing opportunity for national conversation and connection by hosting the 2017 National Youth Arts Summit.

Over the last two years, Australia Council for the Arts held national youth arts gatherings to support our sector as we responded to the changing funding environment and shared our concerns for the future of the only national networking and advocacy body, Young People and the Arts Australia (YPAA).

Located in and around the iconic Carclew House and immediately following the Australian Theatre Forum, the 2017 National Youth Arts Summit will bring together artists, arts workers and young creatives who are engaged in art making with, and for, children and young people, in all art forms, across the country.

Themes
From our survey and consultations, the guiding topics of the program are:

  • Future Proofing - Youth arts advocacy and relevance; how do we measure and advocate the societal benefits of child/youth participation in arts and creativity?
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Processes & Perspectives - A discussion began at Youth Arts Summit 2016, there’s more to say and more to hear.
  • Trailblazers - How are young arts leaders working in new and innovative ways? Where are the intersections between social entrepreneurialism and arts practice?
  • Collaborations - It’s the way of the future! When different industry partners come together (arts and non-arts), what does successful collaboration look like?

Speakers
We have fabulous leaders getting ready to provoke and inspire on-going youth arts agency. Our summit wrangler is Kate Gould, Arts Consultant (eg. MONA, Dark MOFO) & Digital Entrepreneur.

Other speakers currently confirmed are:

  • Helen Connolly, South Australian Commissioner for Children and Young People
  • Lee-Ann Tjunypa Buckskin, Deputy Chair, Australia Council Board
  • Fraser Corfield, Artistic Director, Australian Theatre for Young People, & member of ASSITEJ 2017 Youth Arts Leadership Delegation (South Africa)
  • Alethea Beetson, Artistic Director of Digi Youth Arts, & Indigenous Engagement Coordinator at Queensland Museum
  • Sara Strachan, Independent artist, Arts Front Under 30 Working Group Leader, Australia Council 2017 Future Leaders Program, & member of ASSITEJ 2017 Youth Arts Leadership Delegation (South Africa)
  • Leigh Boswell, General Manager, The Young Company, & member of Australia Council 2017 Future Leaders Program

Outline
The day long event will open with a networking breakfast before official proceedings begin. The summit program will encompass headline speakers, panelists, case studies, breakout discussions, and strategies for ongoing advocacy and action. The event will close with drinks, nibbles, music and further opportunities for casual networking. A full program will be provided soon.

Please join the national discussion as we work towards future proofing youth arts practice in Australia.

But wait there's more......

Saturday 7 October, 10am-2pm

MASTERCLASS: The artistry of the youth arts facilitator
A rare and exciting professional development opportunity for artists working within the youth arts arena. The workshop will be co-led by some of Australia’s most super-duper youth arts facilitators who, representing diverse arts practice, will open up their kit-bags to share hot tips and tools of the trade!
