NAPA Connects: AAC Made Simple: From First Steps to Real Life Use

THE TOPIC
This parent and carer-focused session will explore the journey from the first steps of considering Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to embracing it as a communication tool. This session will cover the basics of AAC and common terminology, tips on choosing a suitable communication system for your child, insights on partnering with therapists and practical strategies for supporting AAC use in real-life.
A highlight of this session will be a parent’s heartfelt story, as they share reflections on their child’s journey toward finding their voice through AAC.
PRESENTER INFORMATION
Evelyn Chiew
Evelyn is a Speech Pathologist based in WA with over 5 years of experience supporting individuals with complex communication needs. Throughout her career, she has developed a passion for working in the space of AAC and assistive technology, witnessing firsthand how it has empowered individuals to connect with others and gain independence. She now works at Control Bionics as an AAC Consultant, supporting individuals to access innovative assistive technology solutions including the NeuroNode. At the core of what she does is the belief that every person deserves the dignity of being heard and valued.
Wandi Cao
Wandi has a background in Biomedical Engineering and is passionate about using technology to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. She is based in Sydney and has been with Control Bionics for five years, where she works closely with individuals, families, and clinicians to support access to AAC that enables people to communicate, express themselves, and participate more fully in everyday life. She is committed to ensuring technology is personalised and responsive to each person’s unique needs and goals.
The online discussion goes for 1 hour and will include opportunity to have your questions answered.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
Therapists, Parents, relatives and other unpaid carers of people with disability, who may be seeking more information or advice about their child in regards to AAC. It is not intended that your children attend this workshop. The content presented will be relevant for any carers or parents of children.
THE WEBINAR
The session will be presented online via a Microsoft Teams session, which will require you to have access to a computer and Wifi. The session is anticipated to run for 1 hour including some time for questions (which may be submitted via the chat function). A Microsoft Teams link will be forwarded closer to the event.
The presentation is due to commence at 7.00pm AEDT. You will be able to submit any questions during the presentation via chat, but we do ask that you keep your microphones muted throughout. We will try and get to as many questions on the night, but please note that we may not have time or we may not be able to answer specific questions in the group environment.
