Description

As part of NAIDOC Week 2018 the City will host a special presentation with Kerry-Ann Winmar exploring the 2018 NAIDOC theme Because of her, we can!.

Kerry-Ann Winmar is a Noongar woman from the south-west of Western Australia. Her family is connected to the Wadjak and Balardong clans, through her parents and great grandparents.

Kerry-Ann has a great interest into teaching cultural awareness throughout Noongar country. Her hope is that language and culture can be maintained and passed onto the next generations.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The City will celebrate NAIDOC Week from 8-15 July 2018, by partnering with community organisations and local Noongar community members to host a series of events including a flag raising ceremony and kids crafts.

The 2018 National NAIDOC Theme: Because of her, we can! will celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.

As pillars of our society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels.
