What is MyStory61?
MyStory61 is a Brisbane-based performing arts organisation that aims to inspire and promote positive change through productions and programs based on stories of faith, hope, and love. We are most widely known for our My Story Project, a production which I first wrote and produced in 2007, which took on new forms as it developed over the years to sold-out audiences in NZ & Australia. The ongoing production features a film narrative, graphics, and dance, and has voices of real life testimonies of Pacific Islander youth at its core. The latest local incarnation of the project series, My Story: The Journey, a collaboration with award-winning composer and producer Igelese Ete, music producer Sam Tuuga and artist Mark Lowndes, came to life at the Logan Entertainment Centre in February last year and featured 90 young people with a total of 150 crew. It was incredibly inspiring to produce as it captured three stories - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, African and Pasifika - and included involvement and input from elders and leaders from those communities.
Every show in NZ was self-funded and ran solely on man power of amazing volunteers that believed in our vision. Now for the first time in Brisbane we want to take it to the next level with our theatre productions.
Our upcoming show will be MyStory61’s first ever cultural show called 'Teine Toa' based solely on the story of our director and founder Lilian Su'a. It tells of her life in the islands of Samoa and the struggles who she faced as she transitioned to NZ for a better life. Her story will be told through cultural dance, song, drama and film.
