Description

Student Research Symposium

Keynote presentation: Professor Cat Hope

Speechless: A Noise opera based on the Human Rights Commission report into Children in Detention

Cat Hope's noise opera, "Speechless" is written for 4 soloists, the Australian Bass Orchestra and community choirs. It was premiered in the Perth Festival earlier this year, and is possibly the first 'animated notation' opera.

This presentation examines the process behind the creation of the opera, from the composition and staging perspective, with a focus on how the composition itself address a research question centred around the possibility of music's ability to provide a different perspective on complex issues, and how digital technology can be leverage in new music scoring.
