Event description

Description

The IAH WA Tech Talks feature speakers from hydrogeology and related sciences. These monthly events are the premier networking opportunity for water professionals in Western Australia.

Tech Talks are held on the 4th Wednesday of every month.

For our July event, IAH Western Australia is pleased to host Karen Johnston, Principal Hydrogeologist at Managed Recharge.

The Hartfield Park Foothills Water Proofing project is Western Australia’s first municipal-scale aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) scheme. It is estimated that a fully operational scheme at this site might be capable of capturing and storing up to 120,000 kL per year of stormwater run-off from the nearby Woodlupine Brooke Main Drain.

Karen will take you through the process involved with getting the scheme up and running and the preliminary results from the pre-commissioning injection trial.

About the speaker

Karen Johnston is a Principal Hydrogeologist/Geochemist with 21 years experience in Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR). After 20 years with Rockwater she has recently established a groundwater consultancy, Managed Recharge, which specializes in MAR.

Karen completed her Master of Science researching geochemical reactions in aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) systems, working on the internationally recognised Andrew’s Farm project in South Australia with the CSIRO. She commenced working with the Water Corporation in 1999, investigating the potential use of ASR in Perth’s integrated water supply system and helping to establish two state-of-the-art ASR trial sites, Jandakot and Mirrabooka, which were direct precursors to the Beenyup Groundwater Replenishment Scheme, for which Karen is the lead hydrogeological consultant. Karen has extensive experience in assessing the feasibility and viability of potential aquifer replenishment schemes, and was responsible for hydrogeological assessment and implementation of the Hartfield Park stormwater recharge scheme at Forrestfield; the first and only municipal ASR project of its kind in Western Australia, as well as wastewater re-use projects such as the Ocean Road scheme in Mandurah.

We encourage members to join us for drinks and nibbles at 5:30pm before the presentation starts at 6pm sharp.

The venue is located within the CBD and is easily accessible by public transport. For those arriving by car, the closest carpark is Council House.
