Event description


This is an advanced training module designed to give you a good understanding of how to plan an off-shore passage and to undertake all the necessary navigational practices to keep you on track and arrive safely at your destination. Sailing experience and knowledge by undertaking Modules 1, 2 and 3 or their equivalent are a basic requirement before undertaking this module. The timing of this module will vary depending on the location of the vessel and the requirements of each participants.

Module Format:

The module is conducted over two days (usually over a weekend) operating from a suitable location in a small group size of up to 4 participants. Live aboard accommodation can also be provided over the weekend at additional cost if preferred to nearby hotels.

Syllabus includes:

Passage planning using charts and publication

Chart work including electronic charts and paper charts

How to read a chart using chart symbols and compass rose

Moving from chart to compass and compass to chart

Variation and deviation

Plotting course to steer

Estimating set and drift for leeway

Estimating position with dead reckoning and various fixes using a hand held compass

Use of GPS and blind navigation

Use of electronic charts to set a course and use of auto pilot

Buoyage by day and night, lights and shapes

Use of Radar and AIS for navigation

Tides and tidal calculations

Crossing bars

Boats log


Estimating weather conditions, wind strengths, wave heights for off-shore passages

Sources of weather information

Basic coastal meteorology

Passage planning based on weather

Reading the clouds
