For GPs, Registrars, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals only

This session will discuss multidisciplinary care options for orthopaedic patients. A team of specialists from CALHN (Central Adelaide Local Health Network) will be presenting on optimising patients for orthopaedic surgery and ortho-bariatric pathways. Kerry Wakefield, Dr Catherine Gibb, Lesley Thomas, Dr Shahram Shahrokhi and Dr Linda Ferris will also discuss the arthroplasty referral and assessment clinic (ARAC) and other requirements for referral to CALHN.


Learning outcomes

  • Explain the surgical risks associated with a BMI over 40 and engage patients in conversations about weight.
  • Describe what co-morbidities may benefit from optimisation prior to elective surgery and how this will assist in achieving better outcomes.
  • Demonstrate safe exercise techniques for patients.
  • Describe the orthopaedic pathways and requirements for referral to CALHN.
  • Explain the role of the GP in non-operative management of orthopaedic hip, knee, shoulder and foot problems.
