Description

This forum is proudly organised by the Multicultural Council of Tasmania and hosted by the Asia Institute Tasmania (University of Tasmania)

You are invited to be part of a special policy forum to discuss multiculturalism in Tasmania and the future opportunities available at the state government level. With a state election likely in the next 6 months, it’s an important time to discuss our progress and ideas for future action.

The forum will bring together leaders of migrant community organisations, service providers, policy experts, decision-makers and students. The Multicultural Affairs spokespeople from the Tasmanian Liberals, Labor and the Greens have also been invited to share their policy ideas.

We are very much looking forward to hearing from our keynote speaker, Mr Hakan Akyol who is the Director with the Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion Division of the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Victorian Government).

The Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion Division drives Victorian Government multicultural policy and program implementation, to promote active citizenship and unity within Victoria’s multicultural communities.

Hakan has extensive experience in multicultural affairs across community, local and State Government organisations. This includes serving as both Deputy Chairperson and Interim Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC), a statutory authority created to provide independent advice to the Victorian Government on multicultural affairs and citizenship matters and to serve as the voice of Victoria’s multicultural communities.

Hakan’s previous roles include:

  • Interim Chairperson of the VMC (2011)
  • Deputy Chairperson and Director of the VMC (2005-11)
  • Deputy Director of the Victorian Office of Multicultural Affairs (2001-2005)
  • Executive Officer of the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (1993-2001)

We have also had confirmation that the Forum will include a panel discussion of the Multicultural Affairs spokespeople from the 3 major state government parties:

Sarah Courtney MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier
Madeleine Ogilvie MP, Opposition Spokesperson for Multicultural Affairs
Cassy O’Connor MP, Greens Spokesperson for Multicultural Affairs

The three spokespeople will discuss the issues and ideas raised in the keynote speech and provide their vision of the future opportunities for multicultural policy in Tasmania.

The forum will conclude with a light networking lunch.
