Event description

Description

Writer and filmmaker Billy Cotsis along with writer and lawyer Costa Vertzayias OAM, will discuss how the modern nation of Greece came into existence via the revolution of 1821.

The Greek people, once a grouping of city-states, kingdoms and empires had come under the conquests of the Ottoman Empire with the end of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire in the fifteenth century. Greek people, like many across Europe, looked for an opportunity to gain independence for a foreign empire by the end of the 1700s.

From Lord Byron, the declaration of independence in far away Romania to the establishment of a provisional Greek
nation, the talk will provide an overview of Greek Independence.
