Eating Disorders and Impulse related disorders: Shared Neurobiological Vulnerabilities and Therapy Management

The relationship between Eating disorders (ED) and Impulse related disorders, namely kleptomania, compulsive buying, gambling disorders, among others, are increasingly being described in the ED literature. EDs with those comorbid conditions are usually associated with greater ED symptomatology, specific ED subtypes, more psychopathology and dysfunctional personality traits and a poorer prognosis. Although impulsivity is an important vulnerability factor associated with female and male EDs, there is a lack of studies, that examined how to improve it. According to the ED literature, there has been strong support for cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing binge/purge behaviours, but the treatment of impulsivity itself has received less support. The lack of changes in impulsivity traits after therapy is one of the main factors that have been associated with both low remission and high drop-outs rates of ED patients. Whereas some studies have tried to focus on the management of impulsivity in Bulimia Nervosa by means of indirect techniques, there is a lack of attempts to improve impulsivity directly. In this presentation we will discuss the relevance of targeting impulsivity directly in EDs and we will also present the effectiveness of a new technological approach, based on a serious video-game, in reducing clinical ED symptoms, specifically impulsivity.
