Event description

Description

Moya Dodd is a Partner at Gilbert+Tobin Lawyers and a former player (1986 -1995) and vice-captain of the Matildas, Australia Women’s National Soccer team. She was one of the first women to serve on the FIFA Executive Committee (2013-2016) and on the board of Football Federation Australia (2007-2017).

Moya’s story will cover four generations, beginning with her grandparents, who were Chinese market gardeners in Western Sydney, an occupation common to a number of Chinese families at that time. This will be followed by Moya’s mother and father’s story, her life growing up, to her family today.

As chair of FIFA’s Women’s Football Task Force, she was “one of the most credible and outspoken voices for change within the organization” (Vice Sports), and “the driving force in the recent push for women within FIFA” (New York Times). She also worked extensively on the successful campaign to allow women to play in the hijab (headscarf).

Moya Dodd has won many national and international awards, including in 2016, overall winner of the AFR Westpac Women of Influence awards and Women’s Health magazine’s Person of Sporting Influence. She also received the IOC Woman and Sport Award 2016 for Oceania and was named the 7th most powerful woman in international sport (outside the US) in Forbes magazine (March 2018).

Join us for what will be a scintillating, absorbing, afternoon with Moya Dodd, a progressive Chinese Australian community leader. This is a 2018 Australian Heritage Festival My Culture, My Story theme event.
