Towards Gender Equality in Victorian Sports Reporting

About this Event

News media plays an important role in shaping our perceptions around gender and sport. Journalists’ stories have the power to promote positive role models and counter or perpetuate damaging stereotypes. While recent research suggests Victorian print coverage handles many aspects fairly across gender, women in sport continue to be dramatically under-represented compared to their participation levels.

Following the release of the VicHealth-commissioned report Buried Treasures and Missed Opportunities in Victorian Sports Reporting, we are pleased to host a special panel moderated by ABC news presenter and long-time sports specialist Mary Gearin to discuss its findings and a way forward:

Dr Jeni Klugman, Managing Director at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and VicHealth Leading Thinker

Dr Bridie O’Donnell, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions

Gen Simmons, Deputy Chair, Women Sport Australia

Nb: In light of the current social distancing rules, this event is being presented as a Zoom webinar. We look forward to returning to our regular schedule of events when it is safe to do so.
