Want your child to be active and healthy? Join us for Move, Play & Learn.
We are inviting children aged 18 months to 4 years to participate in the City of Parramatta's program, encouraging active play and educating you and your child on how important physical activity is at an early age.
- Did you know that current research is increasingly finding that children pre-school are unskilled at basic movements such as throwing, running and jumping? A recent study (Paediatrics, 2012) reported that by year 2 most children should have mastered a basic sprint, vertical jump, side gallop and leap. Unfortunately the results did not reflect this with only 10% of the sample group demonstrating all four skills.
- Did you know that parents mistakenly believe that children naturally learn fundamental movement skills when in fact children must be taught them? Consequently, without this confidence & body familiarity, children are less likely to participate in organised or school sport or even play with their friends. Children lacking the four basic movement skills also had had lower fitness levels & were more prone to being overweight or obese. Early childhood is a critical period for the development of fundamental movement skills & studies suggest early intervention is key.
Our program for term 4 will start on Monday 6 February and run until Monday 27 March (inclusive).
