Description

Finish the year with your biggest overnight hike yet! Are you up for the challenge?

Mount William is known for its popular lookouts and fascinating scenic sites, and with a height of over 1,168 metres, is the highest point in the Grampians and has some of the most breathtaking views of the southern Grampians.

This is a Grade 5 Overnight Hike of 40km, over two big days, with a lovely camp ground.

To attend this walk you need to have a good fitness level, and either have some previous hiking experience or have attended a TSA overight hike.

MAJOR MITCHELL PLATEAU: 40km, 2 days

Mount Duwil (Mount William) and the Major Mitchell Plateau are the highest points in western Victoria, with all that implies – a wild and remote landscape with sweeping views of the surrounding country, including almost all of the Grampians.

Day 1: Ingleton Track to First Wannon Creek (17km, 6 hours)

Day one starts with some open fire trial before tackling the long and often steep climb up the flank of Mt William. Leading to the top the trail opens up some amjestic views of the Grampians which you get to gaze at for most of the next two days. After the summit and a welldeserved break, we tackle the rocky trail down and up a large valley before getting up to the Mitchell Platue. Our trail now meanders towards a great little campground on the First Wannon Creek.

Day 2: First Wannon Creek to Ingleton Track via Jimmy Creek Campground (23km, 7 hours)

The second day begins with a traverse of the plateau, with occasional views of the Serra Range to the west and the plains of the Wimmera to the east. then we descend steeply along fire trail to the main road and the jimmy Creek Campground. Eating the last of our meals, we then hop and skip along open firetail again heading north along the edge of the Serra Range back to our starting point.
