Event description
Join the MCADPG for a night of racing as we raise funds for the future of the bushfire-ravaged Mount Cannibal and its surrounds.

About this Event

The Mount Cannibal and District Preservation Group is hosting a fundraiser for the bushfire-ravaged Mount Cannibal (Garfield North, Victoria) and surrounding regions at the Pakenham racecourse on Friday 18 October.

Racing for the Future is inviting people to come together for a night of racing to help secure a better future and efficient recovery for the regionally significant reserve and its surrounds following the March 2019 bushfires.

To help raise funds, an original Mark Knight framed watercolour painting will be up for auction. The painting, which featured as a double page spread in the Herald Sun in 2011, famously commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne Cup.

Also available to purchase will be copies of Mark’s original limited edition ‘Mount Cannibal Picnic Party’, which depicts a number of native animals enjoying an afternoon out on Mount Cannibal.

Mark will also be present on the night to sign any artwork sold.

Guests will also have the opportunity to hear from notable flora and fauna experts who will provide information about the reserve, its rehabilitation process and what people can do to assist the much-loved reserve.

Mount Cannibal and the surrounding regions of Garfield North, Bunyip North, Tonimbuk and Tynong North were devastated in the March 2019 bushfires, with the mountain receiving significant overall damage.

Prior to the bushfires, it homed a number of native flora and fauna, including 49+ orchid species, some of which were considered endangered. Also present was the Powerful Owl, which is listed as a threatened species due to loss of habitat.

The mountain also welcomed thousands of visitors each year to walk its self-guided nature trail.

Mount Cannibal is currently closed for rehabilitation, and is scheduled to be open late 2019 if weather conditions permit.

Profits raised from the night will be split between The Mount Cannibal and Friends Committee and The Mount Cannibal and District Preservation Group.

Tickets are $95 each and include admission, race guide and a three course sit down meal. Tables of ten are available.
