Description

The Electric Event in Formula SAE/ Formula Student car competition is undergoing rapid development. Traditionally, most of the electric cars have featured motors adapted from other applications such as aircraft or servo motors. Gearing is done with in a similar way to the combustion cars with chain drives and differentials. Now, particularly in the European competition, four wheel motors with integrated planetary gearboxes are the standard for the top performing teams. Sometimes this is done by repackaging an existing motor, but increasingly the motor/ gearbox/ drive is a custom solution that is totally optimised for the application.


Regal Beloit, in conjunction with Monash University and RMIT, is developing an optimised/ integrated in-wheel traction solution.


This talk will discuss the

  • background that has driven the move to the four wheel motor solution

  • motor design for maximum specific torque (Nm/kg)

  • challenges of designing and integrating the gearbox

Presenter's Biography:

Greg Heins received the B.Eng. (Hons.) degree (Mechanical) and the University Medal from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, in 2000 and the Ph.D. degree from Charles Darwin University, Darwin, Australia, in 2008. He is currently the Head of Global Enabling Technology for Regal Beloit Corporation. He is also a part time Lecturer at the University of Melbourne and the secretary of the IAS Electric Machines Committee. He has previously worked as a Manufacturing Engineer with Robert Bosch Australia and as a Senior Lecturer at Charles Darwin University. In 2011 he was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. His research interests include the design, control and manufacture of electric motors, vibration analysis, system modeling and identification.
