Motivational Interviewing - Putting it into practice

Presenter: Sandra Roeg & Sharon Patterson Senior Education Officers Turning Point.

2 Day workshop - Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th February 2020

This two (2) day skills based workshop is designed for those working in the Department of Human Services (DHHS) funded AOD sector and are looking to refresh and/or develop their skills in using Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Motivational Interviewing is a foundation skill that supports AOD workers in their day to day roles by utilising a collaborative method for evoking and strengthening conversations about behaviour change. Motivational Interviewing offers works an effective alternative to trying to persuade clients to change and instead supports motivations for positve change.

The workshop will offer an opportunity to:

  • learn about the most up to date version of MI

  • develop and work within the spirit of MI

  • increase ability to work collaboratively and effectively with the struggle of change

  • discover how to use questions, reflections, and summaries selectively to facilitate change

  • learn how to respond to clients who have low confidence and high ambivalene

Sandra Roeg has over 20 years experience in AOD education and training and over 20 years of clinical experience in the AOD sector supported by a background in psychiatric nursing, psychotherapy and mental health sciences. Sandra has been instrumental in the development and delivery of training to the AOD sector in Victoria as part of the minimum qualification strategy and also to higher education undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Sandra is passionate in supporting clinicians to have a disciplined and effective working knowledge of Motivational Interviewing. Sandra is a registered member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)

Sharon Patterson's role in Alcohol and other Drug education and training spans over 25 years and is supported by clinical experience in the AOD sector and a baground in mental health nursing. Sharon has had clinical experience in a range of AOD settings. Her work at Turning Point includes development and delivery of training and education programs for General Practitioners, Nurses, Primary care helth workers and the Alcohol and Drug workforce. Sharon has been key trainer in the delivery of Motivation Inteviewing to Nurses through ANMF.

Together they are an engaging team who will provide up to date information in an interactive workshop.

Who should register? Victorian DHHS funded AOD workers new to their role and/or those looking to refresh and update existing knowledge.

Lunch: A light lunch including a vegetarian selection is provided on both days of training

Getting to Turning Point:

Turning Point is located at 110 Church Street, on the corner of Church Street and Tweedie Place. Entrance is via the front of the building, to the right of the Skoda car dealership. Please take the lift to the first floor and visit reception.

Cancellation policy:

This workshop is a free event, however if your circumstances change please log into your Eventbrite account and cancel your registration or alternatively email tp@turningpoint.org.au no later than 7 days prior to advise of your inability to attend.

If notification is not received within this time frame a fee of $50 will be charged as per invoice details at the time of registration.

Please note that your registration will not be accepted if your organisation is not DHHS funded.

Places are limited in these free workshops, so all participants are requested to provide their Manager’s contact details during registration. Managers will be contacted if participants fail to attend training without providing notice.
