Event description
I know, breaking the stigma around mental health is challenging but with collaboration anything is possible.

About this Event

African women are the heart of their families, wether they are young adults or full grown women. They have responsibilities that are automatically a sign to them. With these responsibilities, a lot of health issues occur such as, high blood pressure, continuous migraine and other underline health issues. Once a woman is married or had a child, the responsibilities continues non-stop to their own families. Causing mental health issues that goes unsaid and they can’t voice their issues because of the stigma behind mental health within the African communities.

Postnatal depression is a major health problem for many African women but it gets press down everyday because of the stigma behind mental health. African culture and tradition, believe there is “no such thing is mental health” and that stigma causes the individual mental health to decline. After that, they will label it as witchcraft from a certain individual. The patterns continues from generation to generation, although they know childbearing is a matter of life or death, experiencing postnatal depression is a “No No” causing barrier to treatment.

Without taking away our cultural and traditional beliefs. Let’s break the stigma on mental health by educating ourselves on mental health. Being mentally aware, is a very important skill to have as a individual. Malaika Mental Health Services is running a mental health awareness event for young mothers within the African communities.

Let’s break the stigma on postnatal depression by coming to the event. Come and listen, learn and take away something that might relate to you personally. We have guest speakers from the mental health sector and individuals with lived experience.
