Event description

Description

To mark International Human Rights Day the annual Mornington Peninsula Human Rights Oration will be held. This years keynote speaker is Peter Aldenhoven, President of Willum Warrain (Aboriginal Association Incorporated), an Indigenous rights advocate, and the Director of Indigenous Education at Woodleigh School. Originally from Stradbroke Island, Peter's passion has led him to be actively involved in promoting Indigenous rights and equality.

The Oration will address the politics of identity, ongoing cultural dismantling and absorption, and the importance of recognising Australia's First Peoples through a Treaty. Peter will also discuss contemporary connections to the history of the Boon Wurrung/Bunurong peoples on the Peninsula; along with the challenges for Aboriginal people living in post-colonial times, particularly as a result of the assimilation period.
