Description

Supporting Nutrition for Australian Childcare

Please join the Murdoch School of Education for a FREE seminar presented by Karen Lombardi, Telethon Kids Institute, and Dr Ruth Wallace, Edith Cowan University.

Body image develops between 3-5 years of age, and children in Western culture recognise that being thin or muscular is highly valued. However, many educators do not recognise that body image develops in children as young as 3 years of age, and that the way they talk about food, their own bodies and the bodies of others has the potential to influence the way children think about themselves.

The Supporting Nutrition for Australian Childcare (SNAC) website was launched in 2014 and currently has more than 2,200 members from around Australia. Although it was initially developed for early childhood educators, it now hosts SNAC OSH for educators who work in outside of school hours care, and SNACing 101, a nutrition education package for educators, is also underway.

In this seminar, Karen Lombardi and Dr Ruth Wallace will present their research in the areas of early childhood nutrition and body image in early childhood education and care settings.

About the presenters

Karen Lombardi

Karen Lombardi

Karen Lombardi is a recent PhD graduate whose research explored early childhood educators' knowledge and understanding of body image development in very young children. As part of her PhD, Karen developed an intervention, which provided professional development for educators about children's body image. The intervention, which was developed as part of the SNACPlus Project, had some significant impacts on educators' behaviours and attitudes. Karen currently works at the Telethon Kids Institute, developing an intervention to support parents to delay their children's alcohol initiation and promote children's safety online.

Ruth Wallace

Dr Ruth Wallace

Dr Ruth Wallace graduated from Edith Cowan University in 2016 with a PhD in Public Health Nutrition, where the focus of her projects was nutrition in the early years' education and care setting. A key output from this research project was the SNAC Network, which continues to grow as an important resource for the early years' sector. Ruth is continuing her work within this community and strives to support optimal nutrition for young children as a basis for good health across the life span. Ruth is also a Registered Public Health Nutritionist and a committee member of the WA Branch of Early Childhood Australia, and the WA Health Promoting Schools Association, and a co-convener of the Public Health Association of Australia Special Interest Group for Child Health, where she advocates for the health and wellness of young children. Ruth has been employed as a lecturer and tutor at Edith Cowan University since 2010, teaching units such as child and adolescent health, and across health promotion, nutrition and research topics.
