Event description

Description

Co-hosted by the ANU Myanmar Research Centre and the Australia Mon Association

On Monday 22nd January 2018, a special one-day conference in Canberra, Australia will take stock of the socio-political shifts, cultural dynamism and aspirations of Mon people in Myanmar/Burma and in diaspora communities across the globe.

After decades of intractable ethno-national conflict, military rule and economic stagnation, in the last five years Myanmar has seen a transition to partial civilian rule coupled with economic and political liberalisation. Since these changes and the signing of a preliminary ceasefire agreement between the New Mon State Party and the Myanmar government in 2012, the lives of many Mon people have changed markedly. Yet despite promising developments in some parts of Mon State the future of the Mon in Burma/Myanmar and around the globe remains less than clear.

It is in this context that a one-day conference titled ‘The Mon in Myanmar - 2018 and beyond’ will be held at the Myanmar Research Centre, Australian National University, Canberra. Following on from the Karen in 2017 conference co-convened with University of Oxford, the conference will form the first day of the 2018 Mon Democracy and Peace Forum organised by the Australian Mon Association.
