Event Details

Guided by the spirit of interwar modernity, this walking tour will trace a lazy path through the guts of Sydney from Hyde Park to Sydney Opera House.

Exploring the urban and architectural ideals at the heart of modernism, ideas borrowed from the great Europe and North American cities in the early 20th Century, this tour will discuss the mediating factors of distance, culture, technology, politics and environment as we search for the influence of modernity on contemporary Sydney.

Modernism's twin strands will be our guide. On the one hand Art deco, an overtly decorative, and popular style that concerned itself with the aesthetic of the machine rather than the machine itself, beautifully explored in Sodersten's QBE Building and Delit’s Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park. We will also look at inspired examples of the work of more 'serious' modernists like Harry Seidler, finishing with seminal projects by Renzo Piano and Jørn Utzon where the ambition of a new, younger generation of modernists reached its zenith.

Sydney Architecture Walks

We are architects and we conduct tours of Sydney on foot and on bicycle.

Each tour is a straightforward and jargon-free story-telling journey that explores ideas through architecture, offering an interface between in-depth architectural knowledge and the wider design-conscious community.

We want you to understand the how and why of the city whilst we explore and unpack Sydney’s most provocative and daring projects; works of contemporary architecture, public art and landscape that inspire and delight but also projects that reveal something of Sydney's grimy pulse.
