A workshop on waste facilitated by Rachel Kelly, circular design activist and founder of E tū and artist and sustainability advocate Ulla-Britta Westergren.

Understanding where products come from and where they end up after use are important factors in building empathy and curiosity for the supply chains in which the items are made. Raising awareness of the need to move towards a circular economy by looking at the opportunities to repurpose waste destined for landfill.

This hands on workshop ask a series of engaging questions including:

– Where has this product come from?

– Where will this product end up after use?

– What can we do with waste destined for landfill?

The workshop aims to get participants to reimagine waste with an opportunity to repurpose textile waste into a fun usable product, keeping the materials in circulation for longer.

The workshop will start with a hands on activity that encourages participants to sort items (food, glass, cardboard, household waste and textiles) into known waste stream categories.

Participants will be encouraged to work in small groups to decide whether they think items are recyclable, compostable or destined for landfill.

By getting the participants to see waste as an opportunity we can begin to clarify the need for a different kind of system where we reduce, reuse and repurpose – making smart use of the earth’s resources.

This activity will lead to a conversation focussed on textile waste, which moves us into the second phase of the workshop, focussing on reimagining textile waste from Etu’s festival waste archive in the form of kite or bag making.
