Come apply your mixed media art making skills to a format that you can continue to experiment with beyond the end of class, using printmaking to create unique cards and gifts for friends and family.
This is the last Mixed Media Mini Masterclass for 2016 and we will be going out in style with a colourful, fun, creative mash up of techniques and materials. I have extended the time from 3 hours to 4 - at no extra cost to you, in the sprit of end of year celebrations and giving! Get ready to P L A Y !
WHAT WILL WE DO TOGETHER?
- Make celebration cards! End of year, New year, Christmas or other holiday cards for you to send or give to friends and family
- (If you like you can also) Make gift tags! Perfect for adorning hand-made, home made or other gifts from the heart
- (If you like you can also) Make handmade envelopes!
WHAT WILL MY IMAGES BE OF?
Up to you! You might pick a colour theme to work on through the afternoon, or stick with one medium, or just lose yourself in delicious experimenation across mixed media. Your cards can be love hearts, trees, christmas images, words, birds, skulls, bikes, abstract shapes, dogs, cats, flowers, houses, boats, letters or numbers, faces, landscapes... whatever you desire!
WHAT STYLE WILL MY CARDS BE?
I will have prototypes made to inspire you! These will be across various materials and styles. There will be elegant and formal cards, messy colourtful ones, traditional Christmas motifs, wacky modern images - something for everyone. For each prototype I will explain how to make it. You can use these as inspiration, warm up, or the basis for your cards. And if on the other hand you want to do something else - do your own thing - that is not just OK it is wonderful. We will be fostering a creative, encouraging and playful space for art making, that is accessible to all t all levels of experience and confidence.
WHAT MATERIALS WILL WE USE?
Paper, stamps, stamp pads, water soluable printmaking inks, art paper, envelopes, collage elements, ribbons, oil pastels, sparkles, hand drawing, markers, old book pages, printed and hand painted papers. All these will be provided. I love to use recycled and repurposed materials so there will also be some recycled cardboard, fabric scraps, beads, buttons, and more to use in your card making. Feel free to bring along similar materials to share if you have spares.
WHAT MATERIALS WILL YOU NEED TO BRING?
Students do not need to bring any materials: there is no 'shopping list' for this class' and a range of fun materials will be provided for all to use. HOWEVER, as a special feature, students are welcome to bring any art supplies they have bought but never used (or rarely used) and want to try out - I will help them figure out how to include them in their card making (eg a special set of pencils you might have bought that are gathering dust, or your stamps, or some ribbons etc). That way you leve not just with cards, ideas and new techniques, but a better understanding of any materials you already have that you have been meaning to try out.
BRING SOME SPENDING MONEY
I will have a display of hand made objects, prints and cards for sale - perfect for gifts!
I will have some low cost packs of art materials to take home, to continue the fun beyond the workshop
There is a cafe across the road from the venue if you need a 'real coffee' in break time :)
ANY EXPERIENCE NEEDED?
No experience needed. As long as you have generally good motor skills and can grip and apply moderate pressure with your hands and are willing to jump in and give some things a try this class will be fine for you. Working in a group is a great way to get over fear of making a mistake. You may find your style expands simply through seeing the ways that your fellow makers engage with the materials.
This workshop will suit people who make home made cards or gifts, scrapbook, doodle, paint, draw, or like collage but would like to try stretching their use of materials or techniques. It also suits absolute beginners who would love to try some art making, and those with limited drawing experience.
Several printing plates will be shared by the facilitator as examples.
Warm up activities will be used to get us moving and making in a playful way.
IS THIS SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?
The Saturday classes are open to children over 11 who have an accompanying and participating adult. This is a great workshop to do with your child, and you might find ways to create collaborative artworks, or just work side by side on your own projects. Children who like making things and can work in a group environmenet enjoying their own process will be particularly well suited. Please use your knowledge of your child to guide the decision about whether this will be a good fit for their interests.

Jade is a transpersonal art therapist and coach who loves mixed media art making and does it for fun, alongside her work with clients. Her approach to art making is playful and experimental and she has cycled through a wide range of different materials, styles and techniques in her work over many years. She is a firm believer in art for self expression and wellbeing, and offers these short mini masterclasses within a framework of art therapy - to help participants become more aware of critical inner voices, to encourage particiupants to align their work with feelings and life experiences, and to create a respectful group dynamic for sharing and learning, all while having fun and learning about a new art technique or material.
