Event description

Description

Come apply your mixed media art making skills to a format that you can continue to experiment with beyond the end of class, using unique hand made stamps you have designed and carved.

WHAT IS A HAND CARVED STAMP?

A hand carved stamp is made similarly to a lino print, but using much softer and easier to cut rubber. Just like a lino print it draws on an understanding of positive and negative space, and uses strong lines for graphic impact. Unlike a lino print, a hand carved stamp is designed to be used flexibly on all sorts of surfaces - such as envelopes, gift tags, gift cards, wrapping paper, mixed media journals, mail art and more.

WHAT WILL WE DO TOGETHER?

You will design and create 2 small (2 x 2cm) and one large (8 x 8cm) stamp. You will be guided through a process to choose symbols or images that are personally significant to you.

You will experiment with using both ink and paint for stamping, and see how prints vary on different papers.

You will gain experience using stamps to make pattern repeat images, and combining stamps to create new images.

You will also leave with ideas of how to use your stamps to decorate a range of paper items and personalise gifts and correspondance.

WHAT WILL MY STAMPS BE OF?

Up to you! Love hearts, skulls, bikes, abstract shapes, dogs, cats, flowers, houses, boats, letters or words, faces... anything you can draw simply using just black and white you can create as a stamp.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL WE USE?

Paper, acrylic paint, ink pads, rubber printing blocks, recyled paper, envelopes, printed and hand painted papers. All these will be provided.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL YOU NEED TO BRING?

Students will need to bring their own set of block-printing cutters. If you don't have a set they can be purchased at most art stores. A set can be provided for $25 in class, if you arrange one week prior with the facilitator.

ANY EXPERIENCE NEEDED?

Nope. As long as you are willing to jump in and give some things a try this class will be fine for you. Working in a group is a great way to get over fear of making a mistake. You may find your style expands simply through seeing the ways that your fellow makers engage with the materials.

This workshop will suit people who make home made cards or gifts, scrapbook, doodle, paint, draw, or like collage but would like to try stretching their use of materials or techniques. It also suits absolute beginners who would love to try some art making, and those with limited drawing experience.

Several hand carved stamps will be shared by the facilitator as examples.

Warm up activities will be used to get us moving and making in a playful way.

IS THIS SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?

This particular workshop is not deigned fo children.
