Event description

Description

Writing Middle Grade Fiction requires a unique set of skills.

Middle-grade fiction is a wide and diverse genre encompassing everything from The Saddle Club to Percy Jackson, but capturing the voice of characters edging into adolescence isn’t always an easy task. In this three hour workshop with acclaimed author, Samantha Wheeler, you will reconnect with an authentic voice and explore the dreams, fears and angers of todays tweens that form the crux of any good narrative in chapter books. Beyond voice and motivation, you will also explore plot and dialogue, point of view and subplots to keep a story interesting without overcomplicating it.

Ticket includes tea and coffee. A portion from the price of your workshop fee will be donated by Share Your Story Australia to enable a Dalit girl or young woman aged between 13 to 19 years old access to literacy education. These girls, who come from the poorest families, have been taken out of the education system to help work on the land, or in other ways earn money for their family. This will enhance their lives through teaching them to read and write. Thank you for your support.

About Samantha Wheeler

"I was born in London, near the beautiful Greenwich Park. I still remember the park's earthy smell. At five, we moved to Africa, where I adopted a slow old tortoise (who later disappeared into someone’s soup), a bouncy black rabbit and a cheeky dog called Penny. I played in the dirt making pretend schools and villages and only dragged myself inside when meals were served. Primary school was just somewhere I went between adventures.

A niggle to write a novel began in 2006.I completed ‘The Year of the Novel’ at the Queensland Writer’s Centre (twice) plus the ‘Year of the Edit’. My first story was accepted into the Allen and Unwin Children’s Manuscript Award in 2009, and in 2011 I wrote a short story, "Second Letter A" that went on to be published in the 2011 anthology of One Book Many Brisbanes’. I kept writing, reading, attending workshops and submitting until ...

In July 2012, I pitched 'Smooch & Rose' to UQP at the CYA Conference in Brisbane, and by October, was offered a contract. I am thrilled to think my stories will be out there being read by the people I wrote them for! So far I have written Smooch & Rose, Spud & Charli, Mister Cassowary and Wombat Warriors. Next year will see the release of two new books, including one about turtles and another about a very special girl.

And there are loads more to come!"
