Description

Michael Verde: The Art of Communication

Can we learn the art of communication? Most definitely.

What’s the difference between making a point and creating a connection? The difference is always the quality of the attention we invest in the person with whom we are communicating.

In this public lecture Michael Verde will illuminate the potential for becoming the kind of mindful communicator who is able to meet others in the ‘between’ spaces of our everyday interactions in a way that invites genuine dialogue and agenda free mutual understanding.

Michael’s focus is on communicating with people living with all forms of dementia. Meaningful communication with people with dementia includes "being with" them, and doing more than just understanding communication techniques and learning how to "manage behaviour."

Communicating effectively means attending to people with dementia with the assumption that they can teach us how they are continuing to seek meaningful communication in their life, no matter the degree or kind of cognitive impairments.

About Michael

Michael Verde founded Memory Bridge in 2003, an internationally recognised, non-profit organisation dedicated to healing the emotional and social isolation of elders living with dementia.

He is the creator of the acclaimed Reading for Life salons which have received rave reviews in the USA and internationally.

In October 2015 Michael visited Perth, sponsored by the City of Melville, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Australia WA and Attitudinal Healing International. His public events were described as ‘inspiring’ and ‘life-changing’, leading to a request for him to return in August 2017.

Michael earned his M.A. in Literary Studies from the University of Iowa, USA and his M.A. in Theology from the University of Durham, England. He is currently earning a PhD at Indiana University in the areas of empathetic communication and literature and religion.
