Description

Training of GPs in the assessment of patients with mental health concerns is paramount in supporting the management of patients in the primary care system. This session will cover the identification of mental illness in general practice patients, as well as appropriate referral pathways and risk mitigation strategies.

Ms Margaret Karafilowska; Registered Psychologist, trainer and course facilitator at the Cairnmillar Institute.

Learning outcomes
• Identify the right questions to ask when patients present with a suspected mental illness
• Identify the warning signs of mental illness, particularly depression, generalised anxiety and psychosis
• Outline mental health referral pathways for patients, including within the after- hours period
• Develop strategies and solutions to mitigate risks in the identification of mental illness in patients
