Event description

Description

The 2019 Mental Health Recovery Forum will support HOPE, EMPOWERMENT and ACTION in mental health recovery. Learn about ways to be involved in your own mental health recovery through advocacy, peer work, trauma informed yoga, Keeping the Body in Mind, the NDIS, and creativity.

With two keynote speakers and a group of enthusiastic presenters to guide you, you will have a great time connecting with others, and meeting organisations who can support your mental health recovery journey in the local community.

This Program is designed to excite your inner self-advocate and get those recovery thoughts flowing.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Peter Farrugia from Flourish NSW will be talking about The Invisible Peer Worker. Peter is the Peer Work Manager at Flourish Australia. Peter’s work involves supporting a growing peer workforce and is passionate about bringing life and energy to peer work. He often participates in lived-experience initiatives and enjoys hearing other people’s experiences of managing mental health issues. Social justice is a key driver for Peter. It reminds him that every human being has value and has an important contribution to make.

Irene Gallagher, CEO of Being NSW, will be talking about systemic advocacy by consumers in the mental health system. As the head of the State-wide advocacy support service for people with mental health issues, Irene has great knowledge about advocacy- from day to day interactions with health providers, to working with policy makers on how to make mental health services more recovery oriented and safe places for people to recover from mental distress.

AFTERNOON WELLBEING SEMINARS- you choose what to attend!

The NDIS and You- four specialists in the field of NDIS will guide you through the challenging landscape of NDIS service provision for people with mental illness including, the National Disability Insurance Agency, the Mental Health and NDIS Project team for South East Sydney Local Health District, a Peer with a lived experience of navigating the NDIS application process, and the Central and Eastern Sydney PHN.

Keeping the Body in Mind- What does an exercise physiologist, a dietician and a clinical nurse consultant have to do with mental health? Everything! Come and hear about how to help your body to keep your mind well.

Yoga for Wellbeing- Most people think of people who do yoga as flexible, bendy folks who can move into all kinds of poses. Some times this is the case, but for most of us yoga is a practice that helps us to cope with the physical and mental challenges that we face in life. A regular practice can improve sleep, help cope with stress, improve general health and mindfulness. In this brief introductory chair based practice, you will be introduced to the importance of the breath and gentle postures. You will be invited to do what you want and what feels good for your body. You know yourself and your body better than anyone.

Turn Your Scars into Stars- Write ‘til you reach Fahrenheit by making your magic marker dance the La Bamba!
This creative writing and poetry workshop dares you to dispel distress by using words as empowering tools. We’ll make the alphabet sweat by scribing an ode: The 'I AM POEM'. Afterwards, the brave are encouraged to SLAM their WORD!

Getting Paid to Complain Constructively- From a lived experience perspective, come and hear about how one person moved from being a consumer to an advocate, and how this changed him. Learn about the doors that can open through self-advocacy, the strengths and challenges, and hot tips on how to have agency in your own mental health recovery.

Afternoon tea provided by partner- One Pot Catering.
