About this Event

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis (e.g., the person is suicidal or has had a traumatic experience). Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training courses authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and delivered by accredited MHFA Instructors across the country.

Course Duration 12 hours (face to face) over two days

Monday 10 February 10.00-5.00pm

Wednesday 12 February 10.00-5.00pm

Course Content Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

Developing mental health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental health crisis situations covered are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)
  • Panic attacks Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours


Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this course.

Assessment Whilst there is no assessment during this course, participants can opt for the online Accreditation Exam in order to become an Accredited MHFAider for 3 years from Mental Health First Aid. More information: https://mhfa.com.au/firstaider

Outcome On successful completion of this course, students will be issued with a Certificate of Completion.

Facilitator

Melissa Hardy, has over 15 years of experience working in various sectors including – not-for-profit, multinational non-government organisations, local government and state government. Melissa holds a Master of Social Change and Development, a Graduate Certificate in International and Community Development, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is currently completing a degree in Social Work.

Melissa runs programs including corporate well-being programs incorporating mental health literacy, Mental Health First Aid, meditation, self-care, yoga and meditation. Additionally, she runs programs including cultural awareness and diversity, customer service and team building programs.

Melissa has been practising yoga for almost 20 years and teaching for 3 years. Melissa’s teaching and coaching style would be described as warm, holistic, adaptable, approachable, friendly and professional.
