About the course

Undertaking the Youth Mental Health First Aid course makes a big difference as it seek to equip adults with skills to assist others. Approximately 1 in 5 Australians will experience a diagnosable mental illness in a given year.

The 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is based on evidence of what is best practice to support someone. This evidence has been developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne, through developing guidelines that cover a number of mental health problems, crises and in different contexts. This course is particularly suitable for parents, school staff, sports coaches, and youth workers. The course curriculum is evidence-based and teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental illness, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

The course has a particular focus on how to respond to common mental illnesses including depression, anxiety problems, psychosis and substance use problems. Individuals undertaking the course learn how to help someone to access the support they might need for the successful management of symptoms as part of their recovery journey.

This 2 day Mental Health First Aid Training course helps participants to gain confidence and the skills to:
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use problems
- Know what to do and say as a first responder
- Find effective help for someone with mental health problems
- Respond to suicidal thoughts or behaviours
- Respond to early signs or in an emergency
- Have appropriate boundaries and engage in self care

Developing mental health problems covered:
- Depression and anxiety
- Psychosis
- Substance use problems
- Eating disorders

Mental health crisis situations covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury (deliberate self-harm)
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe effects of drug and alcohol abuse
- Severe psychotic states
- Aggressive behaviours

Additional information:
The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is conducted in two 7-hour sessions over two days (course materials, lunch and refreshments included). Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. In addition, they will also all be given an opportunity to complete an online accreditation exam to become an accredited Youth Mental Health First Aider for 3 years. (Note: there is no additional cost in attempting the exam).

Are you a Teacher in NSW?
Completing the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course with educAID Au will contribute 14 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 4.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

educAID Australia is endorsed to provide NESA (NSW Education Standards Authoruty) accredited professional development courses for teachers at Proficient.
