Description

What do literary characters tell us about who we are? Short story writers Tony Birch and Melanie Cheng discuss creating characters – and how it can be a powerful tool in revealing truths about countries and cultures.

Dr Melanie Cheng
Is a writer, mum and general practitioner from Melbourne, Australia. She has been published in print and online. Her writing has appeared in Meanjin, Overland, Griffith REVIEW, Sleepers Almanac, The Bridport Prize Anthology, Lascaux Review, Visible Ink, Peril, The Victorian Writer and Seizure.
Her short story collection, Australia Day, won the 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Unpublished Manuscript.
Australia Day will be published by Text in July 2017.

Tony Birch
Tony Birch is the author of the books Shadowboxing (2006), Father's Day (2009), Blood (2011), Ghost River (2015), and was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin literary award for his work The Promise (2014). Both his fiction and nonfiction writing has been published widely in literary magazines and anthologies, both in Australia and internationally.
He is currently the inaugural Bruce McGuinness Research Fellow within the Moondani Balluk Centre at Victoria University.
