Are you ready for research and data skills training and support in 2018?

2018 already? Yes - 2018 is here and it’s time to start thinking about how to get the greatest impact and reach for your research and data skills training activities.

This workshop will focus on training around research and data skills techniques applicable to any academic learners in universities, research institutions or virtual laboratories eg HDR students, early and mid career researchers, users of virtual laboratories or national eresearch infrastructure etc

The workshop will include a mix of speaker presentations, putting principles into practice ‘case studies’ and a range of hands-on group activities. Expected outcomes include:

  • An understanding of the criticality of skills in optimising the value of the Australian eResearch infrastructure investment, and the role Data Savvy trainers can play in informing and upskilling researchers to unlock the potential of their data

  • Recognising how to maximise the impact of research data learning opportunities

  • Developing new or updating existing data training programs that include a greater focus on adult learning principles, targeted training techniques and integrated approaches to research data and other skills training

  • The sharing of exemplars, ideas, concepts for adaptation or reuse: including those for individual consultations, web info, online courses, workshops and more.

Who should come along?

These workshops would be of interest to research and data skills training providers at:

  • universities
  • research institutions
  • virtual laboratories and NCRIS facilities

We particularly encourage people to get together with allied training teams at your institution and come as a group to work towards targeted and seamless support and training programs for 2018:

  • Training and support groups for the Nectar Virtual Labs or NCRIS facilities
  • Data or Liaison Librarians
  • Faculty training teams
  • Institutional Graduate School/s training teams
  • Research Office training teams eg Ethics

What's on the program?

This workshop is an opportunity to have a fresh look at your research and data skills training activities for the 2018 academic year.

Using case studies, hands-on problem solving, theory and examples, we will explore:

  • Skills are critical to make the most of the Australian eresearch infrastructure investments

  • What motivates Academically Contextualised Adults to learn new skills, new methods, new practices in their research? Applying adult learning theories to research training. Dr Mike Brown, La Trobe University

  • Developing your end-to-end data skills and support programs.Ghulam Murtaza: Imbedding Intersect training programs into the existing training landscape and how it has evolved. Also, how to overcome no-shows.

  • Finding a place for your training and messages in the competitive research landscape: clickbait and other attention getting strategies!

  • How do you know if you are making a difference: evaluating your programs - speaker tbc

  • Exploring the theory and practice of your training options. Online courses: Steven Yates, eLearning Coordinator, Monash University

  • Putting theory into practice: powering up your 2018 data training programs.
