Description

PURPOSE

This session is targeted at council economic development executives, related corporate executives and institutional partners.

The session has a policy, strategy and leadership focus geared towards the question of 'how to foster an innovative, digitally savvy and prosperous city?'

MARKET CONTEXT

Whilst Melbourne is already posed to be Australia’s top tech city, the entry of Amazon into Melbourne provides a focus point for conversions with not only the business community but the broader community. According to the Committee for Economic Development Australia (CEDA), over half of Australia's workforce will be self employed. SMEs and entrepreneurs will have a significant role to play in the economic development of the city.

  • What opportunities will the digital transformation and Amazon's arrival provide for Melbourne?
  • How will it impact local businesses?
  • How can local governments and partners work together to help local businesses and citizens thrive?
  • How can local councils improve processes (such as procurement - from SME and entrepreneurs) to create new opportunities for growth?

According Commbank Retail Insights (March, 2017), retailers who engage in e-commerce, get 29% of sales through online. In the US where Amazon has taken hold, 55% of buyers use Amazon as the first channel for researching products (eMarketer.com, 2017).

  • How do these fundamental market shifts fit in with current city strategic plans?
  • How can we progressively adapt existing policies, strategies and mindsets to thrive in the immediate and long term?

TECHNOLOGICAL CONTEXT

Smart cities is a vision often requiring an integrated strategy around technology, assets, logistics, data and digital intelligence to improve the life of citizens and enable business prosperity.

  • What infrastructure (e.g. WIFI as a basic example) is required to help our retailers and citizens better engage in the E-Commerce world?
  • What infrastructure is attractive to the knowledge-based industries that cities are endeavouring to attract?
  • What policies will enable our commercial zones and make it future ready for technology such as ‘augmented reality’, omnichannel and multimedia shopping experiences?
  • How do cities enable inclusive growth so that all citizens are enabled for success in this tech driven market?

LEADERSHIP CONTEXT

'Technology does not innovate, people do'. It’s important to hone in on the fact that nothing happens unless people are willing and ready to drive change in the digital age.

  • What are the leadership characteristics required to be future ready?
  • What is the role of government in this change?
  • What are the capabilities we need to develop in our leaders to ensure we thrive in the digital age?

This facilitated session is an opportunity to take a strategic perspective of the future of life and commerce in our city. Facilitated by Taylor Tran with special guests Sandy Burgoyne and Michael Alf, we will visit these key strategic questions and have an interactive conversation about preparing our city for the digital age.

Sandy Burgoyne is a researcher, speaker and educator in the field of smart and sustainable cities. She is the Founding Director of The Future Cities Collaborative which has the objective of promoting sustainable urban development by providing city leaders with thought leadership, new research and policy directions, and collaborative approaches to developing sustainable, productive and liveable cities of the future.

Michael Alf is Founder of "High Performance in the Digital Age".
