Event description

Description

Each year, thousands of young, ambitious secondary school students face the prospect of having to perform at their peak throughout a pressure-packed four-week window of exams.

With coursework and testing geared towards obtaining the highest possible ATAR score, our education system forces students (and teachers) to follow the curriculum rigorously; offering limited time for academic exploration, and limited incentive to teach practical skills, and soft skills, which will become increasingly important in the twenty-first century workplace.

Director and Principal Fellow of the Assessment Research Centre at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, Associate Professor Sandra Milligan will discuss:

  • The impact of students choosing subjects they think will maximise their ATAR over pursuing their talents and interests.
  • Whether more space should be created to allow students to pursue passion projects, and what policy initiatives could be developed to ensure this space is created.
  • How students’ foundations skills and broader capabilities can be developed to succeed in a changing world, and what measures could be taken to better-support effective transitions from school to post-school life.

Following her keynote address, Sandra will be involved in a panel discussion, which will also feature:

Diana Vernon | Principal, Methodist Ladies’ College
Cameron McIntyre | CEO, Carsales.com

Hosted by Deloitte, this event forms part of the Committee’s Future Skills Taskforce, which aims to identify and advocate for some practical initiatives that will help Australia develop the skills base necessary to prosper into the future.

The key themes and recommendations emerging from the discussion will form the basis of our policy agenda and advocacy initiatives.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Chatham House Rule applies.
