Description

The 2019 Meet the Professors series is a wonderful chance for staff and students to celebrate the careers and achievements of our newly promoted and recruited professors. Our speakers will share their specialist knowledge and provide insights into ‘what’ and ‘who’ influenced their lives and careers.

Professor Mike Letnic, School Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science

Lecture: Deserts, dingoes and crocodiles
As a final year undergraduate I took a break from studies and hitch-hiked west, ultimately to Perth. Along the way I discovered the vast horizons of the outback. That formative experience, together with a childhood fossicking around the bushland and waterways of Sydney, led me to a career investigating drivers of biodiversity loss and approaches to keep the outback wild. Key themes of my research that I will discuss are: understanding the climatically driven ups and downs of desert ecosystems, revealing the critical role that dingoes play as the top-predator in Australian ecosystems and appreciating the impacts that cane toads have had on freshwater crocodiles at the desert’s northern fringe.

Professor Robert Brander, School Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science

Lecture: Research is a Beach
You can never predict where your research career will take you although beaches are a good place to start. However, specific moments occur that can change not only your research career, but your life and the lives of others. In this lecture I will describe the moments that explain how my love of beaches helped pioneer a new understanding of the dynamics of the rip current hazard and how a personal mission to reduce the number of drownings on beaches has led towards significant community engagement efforts and the establishment of the new scientific field of beach safety research.
