Event description

Description

The 2019 Meet the Professors series is a wonderful chance for students and staff to celebrate the careers and achievements of our newly promoted and recruited professors. Our speakers will share their specialist knowledge and provide insights into ‘what’ and ‘who’ influenced their lives and careers.

Professor Josef Dick, School of Mathematics and Statistics

Lecture: Quasi random ideas in computational mathematics and discrepancy theory

Random (Monte Carlo) simulation is an ubiquitous tool in the sciences to simulate complex models. However, those models often have some structure which can be used to improve performance.
Quasi-Monte Carlo methods are designed to obtain simulation methods which are better than random. They are used for instance to approximate expectation values, in partial differential equations with random coefficients and also to answer questions in discrepancy theory.

Professor Xiao Hua Wang, School of Science, UNSW Canberra

Lecture: Human impact on coasts: what has gone right and wrong

Many world estuaries and coast environments are under tremendous stress in response to the increased anthropogenic forcing. A good understanding of the current state of these marine environment and lessons learnt from these human influences would be extremely valuable to restore and protect these habitats and ecosystems from further environmental degradation and even catastrophe. In this lecture, I will first summarize my 30 years academic career and then use several studies to tell a story about how these environments respond to severe human-induced perturbations, and what has gone right and wrong from environmental and resource management point of view.
