The group will then walk 10 minutes along the promenade to the nearby Shed 2 and will get behind the scenes closer look at materials in our large boat making space.  As a maker space there will be tools and equipment in use and some mess to go with it!  Due to saftey considerations we ask that visitors do not touch equipment unless invited by our craftsman.

Third Leg - 30 minutes

Exhibition beginnings and displays- Victoria Remembers AK82 , located in Shed 2.

A 114 year old three masted schooner, the “Alma Doepel”, is being fully restored in Shed 2 in the Docklands. She was launched in Bellingen NSW on October 10 1903 by local trader, boat builder and shipping entrepreneur Frederick Doepel and named after his third daughter, Alma.

During WW2 Alma was commissioned as an Army Ketch AK-82 to work as an explosives and ammunition ship, carrying stores and personnel to remote outposts in northern Australia and the Pacific Islands.  In April 1945 Alma carried approximately 800 troops into action under General “Red Robbie” Robertson, shuttling them along the coast of New Britain under cover of darkness to assault remaining Japanese stronghold. AK82 and her crew played a pivotal support role for the war effort essential for the welfare of serving troops.

In recognition of this period in Alma’s history the project team has received a grant from the Victorian Government under the Victoria Remembers Grant Program. The program supports projects that help communities make personal connections to the Anzac Centenary and other wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Fourth Leg - Q & A brunch 30 mins

Have a cup of tea and homemade cake with supporters of the Alma Doepel and have your questions answered or explore the workshop and take in the water views to the front.
