Description

Meet the Journalist is a student-led series of interviews with well-known journalism practitioners. The series is designed to allow our students to research one person and their intersection with the major changes now buffeting the industry. Our students will research, interview and facilitate the entire evening – bringing a novice journalist perspective to a broader audience.

In the Spring edition of this series, we will be welcoming Sky News political editor, David Speers; ABC radio presenter, Fran Kelly; The Monthly’s contributing editor and US correspondent, Richard Cooke and Emma Alberici, ABC's chief economics correspondent.

Student interviewers to be announced.

David Speers

6pm Wednesday 28 August 2019

David Speers is the award-winning Political Editor at Sky News and anchor of agenda-setting political programs SPEERS and SPEERS on Sunday on Sky News Live. He is also the host of PM Agenda, and host of The Nation.

David has been Sky News Political Editor since 2000 and Press Gallery President since 2012. He is also Press Club board director since 2005 and moderator of Leaders' Debates and People's Forums at 2007, 2010 and 2013 federal elections.

Amongst the awards that he has won include a 2014 Walkley Award for Best Interview, 2015 ASTRA Award for Best Broadcast Journalist and several other ASTRA Awards.


Fran Kelly

Fran Kelly is an Australian radio presenter, current affairs journalist and political correspondent who has hosted the ABC's Radio National program Breakfast since March 2005. In July 2019, it was announced that Fran will also host ABC's Insiders until the end of the year.

Fran has earned a reputation as an intelligent, informed and balanced journalist who has been a key contributor to the nation’s political and social debates for the past 20 years. She appears regularly as a panellist and commentator on ABC television’s Insiders, engaging in debate and discussion with other experienced political journalists.

In 2011, Fran was named by Sydney Morning Herald’s The (Sydney) Magazine as one of Sydney's most influential people. She has also been described by the Australian electronic magazine Crikey as “one of the most influential media players in the country.”


Richard Cooke

Richard Cooke is an internationally-based writer, screenwriter and author. He is the Monthly magazine’s Contributing Editor and US Correspondent, and has contributed to The New York Times, The Paris Review, The New Republic, The Guardian, Longreads, Australian Foreign Affairs, The Age, The Sydney Morning and the Saturday Paper among others. His work has been selected multiple times for the Best of Longform and Best Australian Essays, he is a former finalist in the Walkley-Pascall arts critics award, and the winner of the 2018 Mumbrella Publish Awards Columnist of the Year. He is the author of Tired of Winning, published by Black Inc, and an upcoming study of Robyn Davidson for the University of Melbourne/State Library of Victoria ‘Writers on Writers’ series. He is a former member of the Chaser’s creative team, and his scriptwriting credits include the ABC series The Checkout.


Emma Alberici

6pm Wednesday 25 September 2019

Emma Alberici is the ABC's chief economics correspondent. She was previously the host of ABC's Lateline and ABC's Europe correspondent. Prior to moving to London, Emma was a senior business journalist for ABC TV and Radio Current Affairs.

Emma has twice been a finalist at the Walkley Awards for journalism.
