Event description

Description

Join acclaimed historian and author, Professor Kay Saunders AM, as she presents a special International Women’s Day address celebrating remarkable women from Brisbane’s history.

Far from being an overgrown country town, Brisbane has a long tradition of producing extraordinary women who make internationally recognised contributions. In her address, Money, Mensheviks and Mannequins: Three Brisbane women on the international stage, Kay will explore the exceptional lives of Janet Walker, a celebrated courtier from the 1880s; Sarah Jenyns, a businesswoman who revolutionised women’s undergarments in the early twentieth century; and Lydia Tritton, a foreign correspondent who married an exiled Russian revolutionary in the mid twentieth century. These are fascinating histories that span the worlds of fashion, design, manufacturing, war, politics and more.

Professor Kay Saunders AM is trained in anthropology and was professor of history at the University of Queensland and CEO of the Brisbane Institute. Kay has authored numerous books including Notorious Australian Women, Deadly Australian Women and Between the Covers: Revealing the State Library of Queensland’s Collection.

This event is presented as part of the Lord Mayor’s Writers in Residence series.

Weekday parking after 4.30pm is available at King George Square Car Park for $5.
