Description

Medieval Books Great and Small: the Clumber Bible

A special viewing of the Clumber Bible, a new acquisition from the Kerry Stokes Collection

Presented by the University of Melbourne Library

The Baillieu Library is delighted to announce an exclusive 10-day viewing of the Clumber Bible (c1395), a sumptuously illuminated Bible formerly belonging to the 7th Duke of Newcastle, noted for its extraordinary size.

Generously loaned by the Kerry Stokes Collection for Rare Book Week 2017, this monumental work will be complemented by a selection of large and small exquisitely decorated medieval devotional texts, from the Rare Book Collections of the State Library of Victoria and the Baillieu Library.  These include the Epistles of Paul (c1200), the Book of Leviticus (14th century), a pocket-sized Breviary (c1325), and a leaf from the famous Gutenberg Bible (c1455).

Don’t miss this unique viewing opportunity and associated lecture program whilst the Clumber Bible is in Melbourne.
