Event Details

Joint conference between Primary Mathematics Association and ECHO

Come and challenge your thinking and ideas about strategies for making mathematical learning visible as you engage in a keynote, and two workshops to support you in your thinking and reflection.

PROGRAM

8.30-9.00am: Registration and display of “Learning Posters” by participants

9.00-9.45: Keynote “Making Mathematics Learning Visible”  Lisa-Jane O’Connor, Learning Journeys

9.45-11.00: Learning Conversation One: Making my learning as an educator visible - What else do I need to learn more about?  Choose from the following breakout sessions:

Who

What will they help you learn?

Is this session for me?

Rod Nancarrow, Leadership Edge

It’s all about Space in the Early Years!

This session is for you…

If you would like to know more about the “mathematics” of space and why this is the critical first step for children’s mathematical learning journey

Mike Chartres, Educational Consultant

Sorting: Where developing mathematical concepts meets observing, comparing, organising and posing questions

This session is for you…

If you would like to know more about “wondering” and “noticing” through a mathematical and scientific lens AND you are interested in exploring the ways that children continually organise, group and seriate the objects around them.

Lisa-Jane O’Connor, Learning Journeys

Developing continuity of learning with Quantifying

This session is for you…

If you are wanting to explore strategies and resources for developing continuity of learning with quantifying across the preschool/reception transition point

Trish Boschetti,

Principal, Snowtown PS

Thinking Mathematically – developing continuity of learning through exploring the Learning Processes (Indicators of Numeracy) and the Proficiencies (Australian Curriculum)

This session is for you…

If you are wanting to explore the connections between the ways in which thinking mathematically are described in the Indicators and Australian Curriculum AND look at practical ideas for making them visible for and with young children

Thomas Harvey,

Principal, Hampstead PS

Using the SOLO Taxonomy in Mathematics to make the learning visible

This session is for you…

If you have ever wondered if your learners really understand the concepts you have been engaging them with and you want to ensure the learning isn’t just at the surface level AND you want to explore how the SOLO taxonomy can support your thinking and planning as an educator

Peggy O’Connor, PMA Committee

Exploring size matters!

This session is for you…

If you are interested in learning more about the key aspects of the “procedure” for exploring size and how it can be developed with children

11.00-11.30: MORNING TEA and LEARNING WALK
Cruise the learning display created by all our participants

11.30-12.15: Learning Conversation Two:
Making the mathematical learning visible for children and families – How are educators making this happen?  Choose from the following breakout sessions:

Rachael from Vale Park PS will share how she uses a Mathematics Challenge to make the mathematical learning visible for the JP children she learns with

Angela, Cassie and Kelly from Salisbury North PS will each share a different aspect of how they have made learning visible for children and families through assessment processes, through E-communication with families and through highlighting the Mathematics of Investigation Time

Josh and Amy from Cowandilla PS will share how they have made the Processes of Counting visible for learners through their intentional teaching and assessing processes

Elizabeth O’Grady Preschool staff will share their journey towards making mathematics learning visible for children and families through their Mathematics Open Mornings and other initiatives

Megan from St Paul Lutheran School will share how she is making mathematical learning visible through the use of inquiry and play in a JP setting

Educators from two JP sites will share how they use a combination of approaches to challenge children to develop a powerful approach to thinking and learning about and with mathematics

Katherine, Ellie and Mandy from The Nest (Preschool / Reception) at Alberton PS will share their stories of making mathematical thinking visible for learners and families

Participant Learning Community – if you would like to talk, share and listen with a small group of other educators about how you are making learning visible then join this group. Be prepared to share!
