Matcha Ritual. First Steps Towards Chanoyu
Tue. 16 May 2017, 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm AEST
Matcha, the powdered green tea used in Chanoyu, the Japanese Tea Ceremony is currently booming in popularity throughout Japan and the rest of the world. This workshop will introduce you to the spiritual heart behind the fad and give you the knowledge and basic skills to integrate it into your life.
Chanoyu has been ever so slowly evolving for 800 years and a proper chaji (Tea Ceremony) takes about 3 years to learn and once you’ve learnt it, 5 hours to perform. That level of dedication is a serious undertaking. This 2.5 hour workshop will give you the very first, fundamental skills to make and drink a bowl of matcha within the framework of Chanoyu.
This little 15 minute ritual honours the tea and its ceremony with the required reverence, but in a way that fits in with our busy modern lives. Once you’ve got a handle on the practice, the ritual will show you how to slow down and take a little extra time for the more gentle and quiet joys in life.
The workshop will cover:
The basic ritual
Making tea for more than one
How to handle and care for the equipment
How to buy and store matcha
How to create a ritual space in the mind and the house.
