Mastering Your Year 11 Physics Depth Study
Event Information
Description
Studying Physics in Year 11 and have your Depth Study coming up in Term 2?
In this HSC Mastery Holiday Workshop, we're going to help you master how to conduct, write and craft a Band 6 Depth Study for Physics!
In this 3 workshop during the school holidays on Monday 15th April from 1-4pm, our Head of Science, Adrian will help you:
- Get clarity on the marking criteria through analysing previous depth studies
- Show you step by step how to write a background theory section (i.e. via literature review/research)
- Learn how to formulate hypotheses including how to use existing theories to develop testable/falsifiable/quantifiable hypotheses for you that help you set up your depth study to almost write itself
- Master how to do data analysis
- Understand how to write a solid discussion section where you pit your hypotheses/background theory section against your data analysis section
- Learn how to account for divergences (in a scientific marks-winning way) between experimental data and the relationships theoretically predicted
Why is it important to master this now?
All students do a depth study in both Year 11 and also in Year 12, so it's a key skill to develop!
While you are well prepared for this in Year 12 (you will have already done one depth study by then and got feedback and learned lessons!) in Year 11 the requirements are above and beyond anything you’re used to from experiments in junior science.
As a result, most students are often lost about what’s actually expected of them for their final submission of a depth study product (report or poster or some other “communicating” model) so this workshop will help you overcome this by getting clarity on how to write your Depth Study for Year 11!
The Key Outcomes
- Students gain clarity on what’s required of them in terms of final product/submission they have to make.
- Students get to practice with performing in-depth data analyses and making considerations/improvements to experimental processes in view of accuracy/reliability/precision etc.
- These are skills that will come up in a big way shortly for most students heading into a year 11 depth study. You then get feedback on the processes that you can take with you into the year 12 depth study.
What’s included?
- 3-hour workshop run by our Head of Sciences, Adrian
- Small personalised class - so you're not one of 100 students in a big lecture room. We cap the sessions at 15 students maximum :)
- Lesson notes and practice questions to help you master your Physics Depth Study!
Investment: $120 for 3 hours of support
Date: Monday 15th April
Time: 1-4pm
