Explore the artform of Pup`petry Masterclass for Ages 18+

About this event

We invite you to take part in a unique opportunity to explore the artform of puppetry in a 2 day intensive Puppetry for Performance Masterclass with leading Western Australian professional Spectacle Puppetry Artist, Animateur/Director and performer Karen Hethey, as part of the Ngurra Nyujunggamu – When The World Was Soft Project for the Red Earth Arts Festival 2022.

Karen is renowned for her cultural collaborations across Australia bringing to life stories from country through spectacular giant puppetry and community performances. In 2019 Lorraine Coppin and Michael Woodley invited her to work with Juluwarlu Aboriginal Corporation Elders and artists to work on four Yindjibarndi Creation Stories and to create with the community the giant puppets, performed for the opening of the Ganalili Centre in Roebourne. She joins REAF 2022 as a guest puppetry artist to work with community for the Ngurra Nyujunggamu – When The World Was Soft project.

The Masterclass will cover:

- an introduction to the principals of animating (bringing to life) puppets

- puppetry manipulation fundamentals and techniques including hand, rod,

object manipulation and physicality.

- the application of small-scale puppetry manipulation to large scale spectacle

puppetry

- complicite and multi operator puppetry for performance for medium to large

scale puppet operation (group work)

- an introduction to visual theatre and devising for performance

The workshop is open to performers, puppeteers, actors, dancers, performance artists, physical theatre practitioners, visual artists and members of community who are genuinely interested in exploring puppetry and visual theatre for performance. Participants may have the opportunity to perform in the Ngurra Nyujunggamu – When The World Was Soft project.

Participants are asked to

- wear loose comfortable clothing suitable for doing physical movement.

- bring an object of special importance

- a note book

If you have a puppet at home you would like to bring you are welcome to do so.

This project is presented by City of Karratha and Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation

Ngurra Nyujunggamu is being produced by Juluwarlu with support from the City of Karratha and Principal Partner Rio Tinto for the Red Earth Arts Festival 2022. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Festivals Australia program for Opening Night of REAF 2022 and has received support from the Australia Council for the Arts and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
