Masterclass Pruning for Fruit: Principles and Practices

Pruning is fundamental to getting the best from your fruit trees, it allows you to control the fruit’s size, shape and vigour. In this practical hands-on Masterclass, you will learn the pruning skills to maintain good fruit size, quality and quantity and to keep your fruit trees bearing fruit throughout their productive life.
This is an introductory pruning Masterclass where you will learn optimal pruning times, how to prune for shape and size, correct pruning techniques and how to get the best from your fruit trees.
See these skills being demonstrated by industry experts and practice your own techniques on apple, apricot and plum fruit trees. The skills you will learn working with these fruit tree varieties provides an excellent basis for learning pruning skills that can be applied across many other fruit tree types.
It will be a morning of hands –on horticulture, delivered in the orchard at Urrbrae High School, with experienced and masterful pruning instructors.

When to prune: The difference between summer and winter pruning and pruning through the growing season
Shaping fruit trees: The 3 R’s of pruning: Pruning for shape and size
Correct pruning technique: Cutting for collars and controlling root stock, Cutting to bud, cutting to replacement shoot, cutting to main stem
Pruning for fruit: Understanding the fruit habits, Identifying fruit spurs, fruit thinning
