Thinking On Your Feet: Improvisation skills for business leaders

Do you ever walk away from a meeting and say to yourself “I should have said X instead of Y!” and wish you could rewind and edit the conversation?

Do you ever wish you could be as creative and spontaneous as the folks on Saturday Night Live?

Every interaction with a client or contact is an opportunity which may not come around again - so we need to be ready to give our best performance without a script.

We don’t always have the luxury of “hiding” behind a screen to buy time to prepare our response. More often than not, you are in a face-to-face situation and you need to react to what is being discussed there and then, often with little or no preparation, knowing that the decision or reaction taken can have a long-term impact.

This is where improvisation skills give us an unfair advantage.

We will practice the techniques used by performers to instantly respond to changing scenarios and enter a parallel universe where competitiveness is a liability and collaboration rules. Our automatic habits will come into sharp focus and we can try new ways to cooperatively engage with others. Latent talents and abilities come to the surface and can be added to one’s palette of leadership skills.

The positive validation that comes from creating laughter using new behaviours sets up a feedback loop evoking more collaboration to come forth.

Some delegates have made life changing transitions as a result of this powerful work.

Taking the methods learned back to the workplace will:

  • Lay a foundation for increased collaboration
  • Quickly and deeply bond and inspire a group
  • Create a positive and supportive environment

Approach

An experiential process in which simple techniques are applied in a series of increasingly challenging exercises. There is laughter galore as participants are taken progressively outside of their comfort zone in a supportive, exciting atmosphere.

The skills acquired are embodied and not just theorised. The personal and group benefits and challenges are explored as they arise. One side benefit is that the group becomes more bonded, open and supportive. As individuals gain confidence.

Benefits

Delegates take away highly effective tools which enable instant access to higher levels of confidence and creative thinking. They practice collaborating and problem solving in ways which compel mutual support. The group quickly shifts out of habitual dynamics, becoming flexible and more able to address uncomfortable subjects. Often the quiet ones speak up more and the noisy ones listen better! Previous participants report improved communications with others and a positive impact on morale and engagement.

Testimonials

" I was amazed at what my people got out of the session. It was great fun, very stimulating and gave people fresh insights into what they were capable of as well as helping to recognise diverse approaches and styles in the group "
David Parry-Jones, General Manager, Microsoft

"Our practice event was a great success. John created a safe environment that allowed people to feel comfortable with putting themselves forwards. Delegates were surprised at how funny they could be and the more we got it wrong the funnier it became. Throughout the session we related the skills that were being learnt back to our workplace. Overall this was an extremely successful event."
James Yearsley, Partner - Deloitte

"It is rare, perhaps unique, for us to give a standing ovation to any speaker. The session you gave us was outstanding, full of fun and laughter, great for bonding, and brought learning at many levels."
Brian Chernett,
CEO - The Academy for Chief Executives
