Description

How does capitalism shape religious lives and how do religious communities affect capitalism? In this master class for ECRs and postgraduates, Professor Andrea Jain from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will draw upon her work in religious studies, anthropology, sociology, and South Asian Studies to lead a seminar on new concepts and methods in the study of religion in capitalist society. Participants will read a pre-circulated essay in advance that will serve as the basis for discussion. We welcome participation from a range of disciplines and areas. Places are limited and registration is required. Please register via Eventbrite by 25 July.

Bio: Andrea R. Jain, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, editor of the Journal of American Academy of Religion, and author of Selling Yoga: From Counterculture to Pop Culture (Oxford University Press, 2014). Her areas of research include religion in late capitalist society; South Asian religions; the history of modern yoga; the intersections of gender, sexuality, and religion; and methods and theories in the study of religion. She is a regular contributor to Religion Dispatches and co-chair of the Yoga in Theory and Practice Group of the American Academy of Religion.
